The Nonprofit Challenge
Anna Mae’s Story
Anna Mae has an incredible passion to provide after school resources to immigrant children who were in danger of being left behind. When left behind, she knows that many will join gangs, become exploited (especially the girls) or simply take jobs in which there is no chance of career development.
However, her feelings about relationships with local business leaders, professionals and donors are impatience and frustration.
She wants them to open their eyes, see the needs and give to support her fledgling organization. When donors fail to respond, her heart sinks. When volunteers are mismanaged, she asks, “Don’t they understand who we are trying to help?”
Anna Mae is in good company. Many nonprofit leaders are so focused on providing great transformational benefits to a target population like immigrant children that they neglect their stakeholders. Unfortunately, they settle for transactional relationships with their donors and other community members. Great opportunities are being missed.
